Janice (Hanna) McDonnell was born on January 2, 1926, in Harvey, Iowa. She was the fourth of five children born to Cresco and Edith (Haines) Hanna.

She spent her early childhood on a farm in Clay Township, Marion County, and then her family moved to Knoxville, Iowa, where she graduated from Knoxville High School in 1943.

Janice was then united in marriage with Virgil Berns “Mac” McDonnell on August 18, 1946, at Knoxville. To this union two sons were born, Terrance and Richard.

Mac worked at several different places in Knoxville until they moved to Des Moines where he worked at Barton Solvents for 34 years as a route salesman. During this time Janice stayed at home and attended to the needs of her family.

In later years, she enjoyed selling Avon products. Upon their retirement, Mac and Janice traveled around the United States and enjoyed wintering in Texas and Arizona.

Mac passed away on November 20, 2009. Janice remained in Des Moines for the remainder of her life and passed away at Birkford of Urbandale on December 11, 2020, at the age of 94 years, 11 months, and 9 days.

Those left to honor her memory are her two sons and their spouses, six grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

Janice was the last surviving member of her original family. She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Phyllis Ilene Barnett, Lucille McVay, and Dorothy Core; and her brother, William Hanna. Janice enjoyed bowling, traveling, and spending time with her family
