Caroline Rose (Schmiedel) Smallwood, 78, died at 6:53 a.m. July 31, 2020, at MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center.

She was born April 30, 1942 in Vinton, IA to Edwin and Inez Lucille Belfield Schmiedel.

Caroline married Don Smallwood on June 10, 1961, and he preceded her in death on June 7, 2007.

She was a 1960 graduate of Knoxville High School and was a member of the First Pentecostal Assembly of God in Ottumwa.

Caroline’s family was her life. She was a devoted and loving wife, mom, and grandma. She enjoyed spending time with her grandkids and loved watching them grow up.

Surviving are her four children, Robin (Rick) Weldon of Knoxville, Jeff Smallwood of Ottumwa, Tony (Angie) Smallwood of Union, MO, and Dawn (Matt) Black of Batavia; 8 grandchildren, Steven Weldon, Spencer (Julie) Smallwood, Mackenzie Smallwood (fiancé Trystan Fanning), Brittany (Jake) DeCook, Jordan Smallwood, Megan Black (fiancé Zach Campion), Tucker (Sarah) Black and Maddie Black; a step-grandson, Caleb Linton; four greatgrandchildren, Natalie and Cameron Smallwood, Gideon and Madsen DeCook and two on the way; 2 sisters, Mae Tallman of Illinois and Joan Snook of Davenport; a brother, Alford Tille of Knoxville.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Evelyn York, and a brother, Ken Tille.

Limited open visitation will be 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday at Reece Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Pentecostal Assembly of God with Pastor Richard Schlotter officiating.

Burial will be in Round Point Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the family to be designated at a later date.
